Strip curtains are almost never used alone in a commercial cold room — they supplement a sliding or swing door rather than replace it. The main door still provides the primary insulated seal when the room isn't actively being accessed.

Sliding doors run on a top-mounted track and slide parallel to the wall rather than swinging into the room or the adjacent space. This makes them the standard choice for busy kitchens, warehouses, and any facility where forklifts or pallet jacks need to move through the doorway.

Swing (Hinged) Doors: Pros and Cons

Swing doors work like a standard insulated door on heavy-duty hinges. They're common in smaller chiller rooms, back-of-house storage, and applications where traffic is lighter and budget is a bigger constraint.

Strip Curtains: When and Why

PVC strip curtains hang across the doorway and part as staff or equipment pass through, then fall back into place. They don't provide anywhere near the insulation value of the main door, but they meaningfully reduce the volume of cold air lost during the many short trips a busy cold room sees each day.

Strip curtains are especially worth adding where staff are in and out constantly — a kitchen prep area drawing from a walk-in chiller, for example — since propping the main door open (or leaving it ajar between trips) is one of the biggest hidden sources of energy waste and compressor strain we see on site visits.

Low-temperature strip curtains (rated for freezer use) are a different product from standard chiller-rated strips — using the wrong rating causes the strips to stiffen, crack, and lose their seal much faster in freezer applications.

Undersized door openings are one of the most common and most expensive-to-fix mistakes in cold room projects, since widening an opening after installation usually means cutting into insulated panels and re-sealing the structure.
